August 16, 2017 In the aftermath of the last presidential election, we all hoped that the ugly and divisive tactics of the campaign were merely political theatrics that would fade into memory once the new administration was sworn in and assumed the profound responsibility of defending the principles upon which our country is built. But the events of the past few days have further confirmed that ignorance, racism, and hatred are being given free rein, and that, in light of the president’s heartbreaking failure to stand up to the fringe extremist groups seeking to divide our country, it is up to each of us to assert and protect the ideals of equality, compassion, and tolerance that define what is best about America. We at the Coalition for the Homeless believe that affordable housing, sufficient food, and the chance to work for a living wage are fundamental rights in a civilized society, and that every human being deserves respect. Since our founding 36 years ago, we have helped more than a million of the most marginalized men, women, and children in our society find a way off the streets. And yet we are acutely aware that the programs and policies that provide food, housing, and health care supports for the neediest among us are likely to be significantly degraded by the actions of the White House and Congress – adding injury to insult. We are shocked and saddened by what we have seen and heard in Charlottesville and Trump Tower, and we hope that every New Yorker, every American, who opposes the appalling, unacceptable, and inhuman views of the neo-Nazis, KKK, the “alt-right,” and other hate groups will stand up for what is right and make their voices heard.
