How to Help Homeless New Yorkers Post-Blizzard

New York City got slammed by an historic blizzard this weekend that dumped more than two feet of snow and brought high winds and frigid temperatures. The storm, while dramatic, was merely an inconvenience for those of us lucky enough to have safe and warm homes in which to ride it out.

But for our homeless neighbors struggling to survive another night on the streets, the harsh winter weather can be life-threatening. Here are a few ways you can help those most vulnerable to the effects of the storm:

  1.  When you see a homeless person in need, call 311 and ask for homeless outreach. The City partners with nonprofit service agencies that will send outreach workers to connect the individual to critical services.
  2. Buy a coat: The Coalition is currently in desperate need of men’s and women’s coats in sizes LARGE, EXTRA-LARGE, or larger. Please consider either purchasing a coat from our Amazon wish list or dropping off a NEW (or gently worn and dry-cleaned) coat at our Grand Central Food Program at St. Bartholomew’s Church, 51st Street between Park and Lex, between 5pm and 7pm.
  3. Donate to the Coalition: Even in the midst of the blizzard this weekend, the Coalition’s Grand Central Food Program sent its vans out on the snowy streets to deliver urgently needed food, blankets and other help to New Yorkers living on the streets of the city. The GCFP has never missed a night in 30 years of operation – but we need your support to make sure we have enough food and winter supplies for all those who rely on us each night.
  4. If you see someone who appears to need immediate medical attention, call 911 immediately.
